Character —
Character Name: Aurican
Character Canon: Dragonlance
Character Age: Unknown, but a guess will be at least 1000 years old from his canon point.
Canon Point: When he takes flight for the first time to leave the grotto.

Powers —

Skills: As a very young dragon from his canon point he really has no real skills. He is clever enough to steal kills from his nestmates and curious enough to explore and make new discoveries. He’s also conservative in his skills, keeping to stick close to one meal or one gem to play with and nothing more. But due to his youth and inexperience at his canon point he’s fast in reacting to unusual situations for better or for worse.

Superpowers:

Dragon Form: His true body. As large as horse, he will grow massive as he grows older. With four legs, wings, a long neck and very sharp teeth and claws Aurican is formidable enough in this body. He also has special immunity to fire as well. He has two breath weapons: fire and chlorine gas (presumably as a less lethal breath weapon, as other metallic dragons like him have a secondary breath weapon for avoid violence). There’s a latent ability called dragonfear where truly evil creatures feel terror in his presence, but I won’t let Auri have that until he’s canon updated and fully grown.

Shapeshifting: He doesn’t have this ability at his canon point but will gain it later. I want him to have it via confluence to make it easier for him to mingle in the cities. His shapeshifting will be only to his human form only, which will be a young boy. He currently cannot shapeshift to anything else.

Magic/Spellcasting: At this point he does not have the ability to cast spells. The most he can do currently is to make gemstones glow and float. I don’t know if he can learn spells in-game but I will want him to try anyway.

Limitations: While he’s immune to fire in his dragon form he’s more vulnerable to other elemental attacks. More importantly he’s extremely vulnerable to any ice-related attacks. While he is determined to bring back magic into the world, he currently lacks the power and education due to the death of his mother. As a result he’s currently vulnerable to magical attacks when caught off guard. He currently lacks his dragonfear ability, which means anyone truly evil will have a more equal standing with him.

Psychology speaking, he’s vulnerable to the new world and need time and space to explore it. The book doesn’t cover that part of his life but he’s a good student and learn from his mistakes. That said, mistakes do happen. He’s also arrogant, believing that the short lived species of humans and others are just below him and have a tendency to be condescending. This arrogance tend to bite him in the ass.

Personality —

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:

  • Meeting Patersmith by far. Before him, Aurican and his nestmates known only their nest, the waters they drink, and the bats they eat every night. It was Patersmith that taught him they had mothers before them, that there is an open sky and many kinds of people to learn from. It was him that instilled an obsession in Aurican over magic. Eventually, this drive will make magic return to the world.

The second most formative was Aurican meeting the wild elves. Before he had a rudimentary concept on philosophy in thanks of Patersmith, but meeting the elves truly taught him civilization. He learned a great deal of the history and the arts which became a driving love almost as equal as his passion for magic. He also developed a deep friendship with Silvanos Goldeneye, founder of the Silvanesti elves.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?

While this philosophy defined his nestmates Darlantan and Smelt more, Patersmith implored the dragons to always give mercy, even to their enemies. While Aurican never gave mercy to the chromatic dragons he was more inclined to do so with “the lesser, two-legged species” such as elves, humans, dwarves, etc. When he first explored Krynn he came across the elves and with his merciful tendencies befriended them.

Aurican never faced any conflict that forced him to compromise these philosophies. He did revaluate the concept of love much later in his life when he was the last remaining student of Patersmith alive. He realized he never understood love as the “lesser species” have understood it. He thought for most of his life it was not possible for him to love but only to learn just before his death that it could very well possible. In reality Aurican was very much capable of love, but only in ways is long lifespan can allow it among living with those who are very short-lived.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?

The problem with Aurican was that with his arrogance he never thought anything could hurt him. In his canon point, in his youth as a wyrmling it’s doubly the case. (Fights with nestmates do not count.) He learned later on his life that it was the opposite was true when he discovered the destruction of the city Silvanesti and loss of life. And with the deaths of his nestmates Smelt, Blayze, and Burll quickly afterward was deeply humbling. It gave him the taste of failure and defeat and made him more cautious.

It’s something he never mentioned but with his drive to returning spell magic raised the stakes for him. There was a possibility he can do it and still fail, resulting in the extinction of metallic dragons. But Aurican never allow that possibility to haunt him, no more did he allow his grief for losing his brothers to the chromatic dragons to consume him. Aurican had a mind of strict discipline and it allowed him to become dragonkind’s greatest sorcerer.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?

To return magic, first of all. That was his clear obsession. At his canon point he will also want to explore the world and find ways to learn about magic or at least, the trace remains of magic.

  • Gameplay —
Areas of Interest / Brainstorming: In the book he’s featured in Aurican is poised elegantly and thoughtfully. I want to correct that. I want him to stumble and get confused and make genuine mistakes. Jokes and sarcasm flies over his head but he’s not literal in his thinking. Most importantly he needs a tutor to teach this dragon how to read. I also want him to learn magic of some kind. Even if he can’t learn spell magic in game, I still want him to learn the more theoretical stuff.

Aurican only appears in roughly a quarter of a book and is never mentioned ever again (save a short story featuring his mother), so if I'm doing something wrong, tell me all about it!
